CuttingBoard_03
Course: Personal Project
Species: Black Walnut
Year: Fall 2023
Having primarily worked on long-grain cutting boards before, a pivotal objective in this piece was to exclusively feature end-grain on the surface. End-grain boards offer an array of advantages. The fibers in the wood's face grain act as self-healing elements, naturally reverting to their original state during and after usage. This quality not only helps the board maintain its shape and quality over an extended period but also ensures that your knives stay sharper as they slice along the wood fibers. With appropriate care, end-grain boards can endure for up to a decade or even a generation, contingent upon their usage.
I chose black walnut as the species due to its antioxidant and antibacterial properties, preventing the growth of bacteria through wood and food exposure.
I conceptualized this design to showcase the inherent beauty of the walnut piece I acquired. The grain pattern was exceptionally stunning, inspiring me to emphasize the interconnectedness within the wood grain throughout the construction of this piece.
